Genetic engineering - New, better-tasting varieties of fresh fruit are being developed which ship better and are more nutritious. You can be a part of this developing area of study which uses tissue culture and other biotechnologies. Postharvest technology - To grow and harvest quality fruit is only half the answer. Postharvest technology addresses the challenge of preserving the highest quality for the longest possible period after harvest. Management - The production of fruit involves the efficient management of water, soil and plant fertility, and pests. The career options are limitless. Viticulture - This is an important industry in California, and Cal Poly is located within a major wine production area. There are numerous opportunities in wine, grape, raisin, and fresh market production.
